Personality: Catalina is one of those women who could never raise issue with the “spicy Latina” stereotype attached so easily to her ethnic background because she is, perhaps, the perfect example of this. She is lively and vibrant in all that she does, whether it be cooking or simply getting dressed for the day. Every aspect of her life is attacked with passion – a trait of her personality that has made it quite easy for her to settle into a number of places. Catalina is open and easy to be around and the fact that she is utterly brimming with life is something that tends to rub off on others.

The first to laugh too loud, too long or at the most inappropriate of times, she is also the last to admit she’s wrong. Pigheaded nearly to a fault, an apology or admittance of wrong coming from her is quite the accomplishment. However, when coupled with her fierce loyalty, such stubbornness can be something extremely beneficial to those she cares about.

Born with a sharp mind and an even sharper tongue, Catalina has a tendency to say too much and get herself into trouble. Blunt to a point of tactlessness when angry, she can be quick to make enemies and quicker to hold a grudge. Some would be hasty to write it off as an off-shoot of immaturity, but they couldn’t be more wrong. Extremely intelligent and well educated, Catalina is simply too overrun with her own zest for life to be completely reasonable all the time.

Personal Background: There is a belief that lingers still in the most rural areas of South America, in lands relatively untouched by time where old wives’ tales still hold more truths than any Bible ever could, that talks of men who became cats. Legend has it the shamans of the tribes from whom the current residents descended could turn themselves into jaguars. It was, supposedly, the ultimate sign of their powers - that they could be so in touch with the animals of the land they could join them on their whim.

For certain members of these tribes, the shamans became Gods of mysticism, worshipped for their bond with the animal kingdom and even more so for their nearly overwhelming abilities in areas like healing and foresight. In one remote corner of Brazil, a woman had risen to the position of shaman within her tribe. Prior to her revelation no woman had ever held such a position of power and, as such, shamans from the surrounding tribes wished to lie with her in hopes of creating an offspring even more powerful then themselves. In this way, this woman of such great power was elevated even among her male counterparts because she was what their animal sides craved so greatly: a worthy mate.

And so she chose from one of the tribes, the strongest of all the shamans that she met. Legend says that he was quite powerful, even more handsome, and that she had fallen for him at first sight. And, perhaps more importantly, that he had been swept away in her beauty, in her animalistic grace. Together, the two bore seven children. As they grew and came into abilities that far surpassed both of their parents, they fanned out across the grounds of the country they called home, each settling in a different area, each waiting for their own perfect mate to arise.

It was from this line that the Araújos were spawned; powerful, sleek shifters born and bred in the heart of Brazil itself. After a time, the family settled in Santos, a coastal town just outside the country’s capital of Sao Paulo. Catalina’s father was a direct descendent of this first great shamaness, his bloodline reached back hundreds of years, firmly cemented in historical tapestry of rural Brazil. Her mother was of Spanish descent, a peasant girl attacked at a young age and cast out by her family for the ‘monster’ she’d become. Frederico Araújo was her savior. He took her in, showed her that her abilities were not a curse, but a gift - that shape shifting brought with it not only complications, but also great opportunity.

Together, Frederico and Luciana bore two children: Santos (their eldest – named for the city of his birth) and Catalina. The Araújo children seemed to have relatively normal upbringings…both attended the finest schools in Sao Paulo, both participated in a number of activities outside of school that made them seem like any other Brazilian family. No one outside of their close-knit circle knew the secret they kept, of just how different they truthfully were from all their blue-collared neighbors.

But like all good secrets, they cannot be kept forever. To this day Catalina doesn’t know how her family’s neighbors discovered their secret…perhaps it was enemies that sought to take down the somewhat illustrious family and found the trump card in their deck. Whatever it was, it brought with it a wave of tragedy. Terrified of what their ‘monstrous’ neighbors might do, mob mentality took over.

Catalina had just entered her first year at Mausi Sebess International Institute of Culinary Arts in Argentina when she got wind of the fire that had destroyed her family’s home. Her father had died when he’d rushed back inside to find her mother and the home’s structure gave out beneath the heat of the flames. Nothing was ever discovered about Santos…he was rumored to have been away at the time, but neighbors reported seeing his car in the drive shortly before the fire. Those very people that had lit her home ablaze attempted to put the blame for the fire on her brother, but even her return home brought no news, no word. And so, eventually, Catalina had no choice but to leave. She returned to school, graduated at the top of her class even as she sought endlessly to locate her brother.

As the years passed, slowly, she forced herself to accept that if Santos was still alive he would have contacted her, he wouldn’t have left her so alone. And so she left Brazil without a glance backwards, sought out jobs doing what she loved. For awhile she bounced around, trying out new areas of the world, new types of cuisine, searching for some place that felt like home.

It was during these searches, in her crisscrossing of the globe, that Catalina found herself in the company of one of Halcyon Halls’ staff scouts. News of the school, vague as they tried to be, intrigued Cat enough to drive her to contact the administration. Now she’s come to the school to live for the first time among people with differences much like her own, hoping that that is the link missing from every other place she’s tried to settle.

Weakness: Silver, decapitation, spine trauma, severe head trauma and damage to the heart – like all werecreatures. Like many who have lost family, possible word of her brother is one of Catalina’s weakest points. Her vibrant personality tends to draw people in, though she keeps them at arm’s length and is often hard to establish a truly deep relationship with. If things get too difficult or her discomfort becomes too great, she simply packs up and moves on. As for her ability to turn, that is something that has become nearly second nature. Her parents saw to it that their children’s education spanned far beyond what their schools could teach them and therefore, Catalina knew what to expect from her ‘gift’ – at the very least. Over the years, the process of shifting back and forth between her human and animal forms has become a relatively smooth transition.

Magical Abilities: Ability to shape shift into her were form, a trait that she is just beginning to be able to execute at will. Faster and stronger by moonlight, she also experiences heightened senses (they are still sharper than a mortal’s in her human form, though duller than in her were form), increased speed and healing ability during a full moon.

Any Training: Martial arts - starting when she was a child, at the assistance of her parents. Later in life it has become both a means of exercise and a self-defense practice.

Special Skills: Any and all special skills that Cat possesses are tied to her amazing skills in the kitchen. Her gift was natural, discovered when she was a teen and nourished through excellent schooling and enthusiastic parents. It’s astounding what she can do in the kitchen sometimes. Catalina is also fluent in Portuguese, Spanish and English.
